According to the interpretive center at the site, it was a Spanish mission from much earlier. Which amazed me, too.

Either that or my memory is playing serious tricks on me. (Which is quite possible on chemo...)

Maybe the architectural design was based on earlier Spanish missions? The colonial Spanish did not build missions in Idaho (or any of the states adjoining it for that matter.)

http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/parks/oldmission.aspx gives a build date of 1850-1853 and doesn't mention a prior building.
