http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/25/AR2010032500006.htmlSenate Republicans have successfully identified two minor violations of reconciliation rules in the final piece of the health-care package. The violations will force the Senate to change the reconciliation bill and ship it to the House of Representatives for final passage. The ideologues and dead-enders win a round in their quest to restore pre-existing conditions, lifetime coverage limitations and strip insurance coverage from America's children.

According to this HuffPo piece, the fact that the HCR reconciliation bill needs to go back to the House anyway means the door is open for the Senate to vote on a public option amendment (as their weak excuse before was not wanting to have the bill go back to the House), and the House Majority Whip says he has the votes to pass the modified bill if it comes back with the very popular public option added to it.

In other words, the Democrats could use the Republican's own obstruction to add a public option.

Unfortunately, the Senate Dem leadership has been working hard so far to make sure there's never, ever going to be a vote in the Senate floor about a public option, so there's little reason to believe they'll try to seize the opportunity. After all, such a vote would risk either a public option passing or 10+ Dem Senators needing to explain why they voted against one (and "because the health care industry told me not to" wouldn't fly very well).

Not to be missed:

Executive Producer of CBS's The Unit, David Mamet, recently re-schooled his writers in the basics of writing.

Jay doesn't need this, but I sometimes welcome the reminder. (Caution: Mamet is clearly pissed, as the memo is deliberately written in all caps and contains a few common profanities.)
