I think Dr. Laura was completely wrong to use the N-word, and I think the author of the post you linked to is right: The word is one that should be retired from everyone's vocabulary.

One of the few conversations with my paternal grandfather that I can remember verbatim concerned that, in a sense, even though when I write it out, it sounds wrong. I couldn't have been more than four. He was a huge old man who always smelled of tobacco and sweat, raised in east Texas in the 1910's and 1920s, to give you cultural context. He had me on his lap, and he said, "Now you remember, the nigra man is as good as any other man, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise."
