Over the past two weeks, my spam load has gone up approximately 1000%. As a result, I've had to tighten my mail filters considerably simply in order to preserve my own sanity. Where I used to scan my spam trap for legitimate messages from people I don't normally correspond with, I simply cannot do so any more.

This means that if you are not a regular correspondent of mine and try to reach me by email, there's a fairly good chance I won't be aware of it. Please try alternate channels such as Facebook, blog comments or messages via mutual friends.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Oh, Jay, I totally agree. JC's spam load once got so bad he had to change his email address. It's no fun getting hundred messages when 80 of them are trying to sell you Viagra.

It's spiked to 10,000 junk messages a day lately.

That is a lot. If you have your own server, have you tried greylisting? The other thing I've heard recommended is running the mail through GMail.

Are they spam sent TO you, or bouncing spam messages "returning" to you? I had a problem occasionally with a spammer sending spam that forged one of my domain names, and many of the spams of course bounced and were (incompetently) automatically bounced "back" to me, so I was getting thousands of bounced spam messages daily for a while.

In any case, spammers are incredible assholes.

Also I am pretty satisfied with gmail's spam filtering, FWIW.

Which makes me wonder just what the hell the spammers think they're accomplishing? If you got one spam ad, you "might" look at it. Two, you "might" comparison shop. Ten THOUSAND spams? Of what possible benefit is it to you to respond to ANY of them?

Purely ridiculous behavior.

Worse, the university's spam filter on my work account is letting WAY too much spam through -- and has managed to block a couple of important legitimate emails. Yeah, that sort of behavior also endears me to spammers. Grr. Snarl.

They may think his domain is an online service with many users. And how do we know that is not the case? It might be the explanation for how Jay is able to write so much.

I wish there was a better way to weed out the dreck. Important stuff gets lost in spam filters too. Oh well.

Oh noes! Lousy spammers, may their armpits be infested with the fleas of a thousand camels.

Ahem, so when I have a possible link salad item, or other such missive, which method will beam me to you, Scotty?

[Seriously speaking -- sorry you are having such problems. I gather enough garbage email, even with all my filters, but it is still a manageable amount. You have my sympathy, sir.]
