Subject: [help] China pattern ID

Y'all did such a beautiful job on the china pattern question a year or two ago that I have a new china pattern question.

calendula_witch found some Haviland plates in a thrift shop. She's having trouble running down the pattern. Most of what she can find online shows the pattern extending into the flat of the plate, but these are on the rim only.

cal_china_01
One of the plates in all its glory.

cal_china_02
A closer view of the pattern.

cal_china_03
The maker's mark, sadly blurred by low light.

Here is what the words on that last photo say:

Haviland, France

Haviland & Co Limoges
for
S&G Gump Co
San Francisco

With a bear, presumably to symbolize California.

Any thoughts on this pattern, or information about its history, would be most welcome!

Gumps is a huge department store in San Francisco. They may have records of what they imported for Fine China to sell. Try contacting their customer service department. HTH Kate

The Gumps of yore is no longer the Gumps of today...alas. But they may have records of the "old" Gumps, I can try there... :-)

Seconded. I did a search for "haviland floral swags rim" (those flower thingies are called swags in plate-speak) at replacements.com and came up with 7 pages, mostly without images on file - I looked through the ones with images and there is no match, but if you send them your image they may be able to ID it for you.

If there is a date or name, these ancient eyes are totally not seeing it. (Just had a birthday, you know...) :-)

Looks like a Gumps exclusive. Which means it will be hard to run down. Gumps was a very high end store where, if you had the folks who could afford to shop there, they always had the best.

Your best bet might to be put out an ISO thru Craigslist SFO and see someone has bits they'd be willing to part with. As the pattern was exclusive to the SF store, it's the best place to start.

Poke about here http://www.chinaroyale.com/Merchant4/merchant.mv?page=chinaroy/CTGY/DinHav-HAVILAND&gclid=CK-_oeLWiKUCFSg1gwoda2_aMw
As they seem to carry the Haviland/Limoges line.
