? - Florida this summer, visiting my brother's family.

Mr Larison's question "Even if America were objectively the greatest nation in history, why would we need to talk about it on a regular basis?" reminds me of a description of George HW Bush in "The Clothes have no Emperor" to the effect of when a man feels the need to constantly assert his manhood he must realize deep down he really doesn't have it. (see also in "Screwtape proposes a Toast" the discussion of how no one who says "I'm as good as you" believes it. If they did, they would not say it)

Though in other news, Rand Paul is saying that all spending cuts are on the table, including military, while other folks are reminding John Boehner that when he talks about cutting "discretionary spending", that includes the Pentagon.

? Four days ago, from LA home to New Zealand. And fourteen other flights, plus one helicopter ride, in the six weeks before that. Yeah, my green credentials are shot. I'm going to be planting trees for the rest of my life to repay my carbon debt.
