I'm most of the way through writing another Sunspin short, "A Long Walk Home". Might get it finished today. Also, going hiking up on Mt. Hood today with calendula_witch and T—. It's nice to be able to get back out in the world.

I got an email the other day from a reader. I hesitate to call it a fan letter, because they talked about how much they disliked one of my books. I have requested, and received, permission to quote the email for a longer post on reader reactions that I hope to draft this afternoon and put up on the blog tomorrow.

Finally, I discovered another odd bug in Microsoft Word, at least Word 2008 on Mac OS X 10.6.5. If I click on a pair of .doc files, Word will open. If I click on a pair of .docx files, Word will open. But if I click on a .doc file and a .docx file at the same time, ie a mixed-format pair, Word tries to open, then goes off into la-la land until I force-quit the application. Easily avoidable, but a tad odd.

So we know I'm hiking, writing, and playing with software today. What are you up to?

Where are you going up on Hood? Best to be prepared for white stuff. I might be up that way, visiting the horse...want to meet for a cup of tea?

Work in the morning, then a looooong afternoon exploring Amsterdam. Three museums today alone, plus a canal boat ride and many miles of just walking and taking pictures. My feet are killing me. But what a way to get the ache!

BTW? This really is an amazing city.

Amsterdam is fun. The city museum is incredible, and there's a little riding school off of the Vondelpark which is supposed to be a miniature copy of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

Is the National STILL under construction? When I was there the ysaid it was going to be out of commission for a while. BUT... they did have a great audio tour by one of the curators explaining why he had chosen the pieces he did for the exhibition. Really a fascinating look into the mind of a museum guy!

You mean the Rijksmuseum? If yes, the museum seemed small relative to the building it was in and there were several closed doors at the ends of galleries. There was also some scaffolding up at the other end of the building from the entrance. But I didn't see or hear any active construction activities.

We just started a UU campus ministry group before our Thanksgiving break. This morning, 12 of us took three cars to the nearest UU society (a small congregation, at that). The expressions when we walked in en masse were priceless.

We also had a very...academic discussion about the sermon over brunch on campus. And a less academic sharing of our previous experiences and what our home congregations are like.

For the rest of the day, besides homework (finals approaching!), I have a composers meeting for our Musical Theater Collective. We're approaching the point where we will start doing our jobs, so it's awesome.

Long day in Budapest, researching an article and spending time with a delightful young lady.

I avoid the *.docx format whenever possible, so I never noticed that, but -- yep, I get exactly the same result when I do what you described.
