Celebrate Reading in 2011 with the Free Fiction Sampler — Erin Underwood with a roundup, including the opening sequence of my novel Green Powell's | Barnes & Noble | Borders ].

Scenes I love: WWBDmarkbourne on Buster Keaton as a metaphor for life.

Language Log on "Auld Lang Syne"

Uluru, Lawsuits, and Culture Change — Interesting thoughts about indigenous cultures and modernity. (Via lt260.)

The New Voodoo — Paul Krugman on budgets and politics and magical thinking about taxes. But Nassau County shows how easily responsible government can collapse in this country, now that one of our major parties believes in budget magic. All it takes is disgruntled voters who don’t know what’s at stake — and we have plenty of those. Are you proud of your Republican Party yet? Look! Clinton!

Nassau county (the county in which I spent my first 20+ years) has always been a political and financial mess. It is primarily Republican (and always has been, which begs me to wonder how I ended up the bleeding heart liberal I became), and as a political entity it has been plagued by scandal, bad judgment, and sheer stupidity. It's a wonder it's gotten this far.

Although the matter of your head is one of some urgency, I understand, I cannot speak to it. To the matter, not to your head. Because I don't know where it is (your head, I mean). Rumor has it that it was last seen over the Brooklyn Bridge, a scenic spot to be sure, but cold, and not quite as conveniently or usefully located as upon your neck. Wish I could be more help.
