Point of note: Amazon is perfectly happy to collect VAT (sales tax) in Europe. So +1 for "Amazon are lying".

I never wake up in the same bed I fall into, for I am not the same person and it is not the same bed. Or something.

A point to add to Scrivener's:

They won't really pull out. This is just a threat to raise public antagonism toward the bill. Amazon make <a href="http://finapps.forbes.com/finapps/jsp/finance/compinfo/FinancialIndustrial.jsp?tkr=amzn&period=qtr>FAR too much money on fees</a> to want to pull out of a state. Besides the $39.99/mo subscription fee, a percentage fee on each sale, and (though this theoretically doesn't exist anymore - it's just called something else) something around $1.40 out of the shipping and handling fee per "standard" shipping order, Amazon also have a massive name-recognition advantage that individual retailers can't match without help from another of the "Big A's" (abebooks, alibris, etc).
