A Never-Ending Viewing Platform Nestled in the Swiss Alps — This makes my head hurt. It's cool but decidedly weird.

Atlas Obscura — Curious and wonderful travel destinations. (Via [info]mlerules.)

The ‘I Love Lucy’ SignalCentauri Dreams on detecting Earth's radiosphere from a distance.

On Labor — Ta-Nehisi Coates with an interesting meditation on pregnancy, labor and male privilege.

AFA’s Bryan Fischer: Native Americans Have Never Had Morals — More conservative thought leadership, with a bonus helping of cultural sensitivity. (Via [info]shsilver.)

GOP cuts deep as right revolts — Enjoy your Tea Party, guys. The rest of us certainly have to suffer with it thanks to your electioneering.

Kristol/Beck Feud Divides Conservatives — I have never understood the conservative fixation with seeing a link between the secular American left and Islamic radicalism. We don't even want the Baptists in charge; what conceivable motivation would we have to work for the imposition of Shariat law? Their own ambitions with respect to a 'Christian nation' are far more strongly aligned with Islamic radicalism than anything liberal-progressives could ever dream up. That something so absurd on the face of it is a cornerstone of the conservative narrative of victimization and decline profoundly discredits anything the Right might have to offer that would otherwise be of merit. Of course, the same could be said of any of half a dozen other key Republican hobbyhorses, such as evolution denial and global warming denial.

Psst - the Swiss Alps Viewing platform link needs to be this. The other just takes you to the front page and you can get so distracted ... by all those ... shiny...

Just off the top of my head, I'd suggest that "they" could be suffering from a bass-ackwards form of "my enemies enemy could be my friend". Islam is an enemy, Secular Liberalism is an enemy, either the two are one and the same, or they must be working together!

I am particularly fond of the tear drop memorial; I may have to plan a visit. (http://atlasobscura.com/place/tear-drop-memorial)

AotD: Nautilus. The word sounds more elegant than Conch.
