The Rose City Steampunk Film Festival is today — Including an author's panel, 3:15 to 4:15, at which I will be appearing alongside Meljean Brook, M.K. Hobson, Andrew Mayer and Devon Monk. Come on by if you're in PDX this afternoon

La Agente's blog has moved — Plus she got promoted. Pop over and say 'howdy'.

'Huckleberry Finn,' Robotic Edition — Hahahah. (Via [info]willyumtx.)

A little cognitive dissonance from Criggo

Ice Fishing for Cosmic Neutrinos — I can't decide if the picture or the explanation is cooler on this APOD post.

The Dirty Little Secrets of Search — For those interested in the nuts and bolts of such things.

How one man tracked down Anonymous—and paid a heavy price — More on Anonymous and HBGary Federal.

Iran Bans Valentine's Day — It's just nuts what happens to a country when you let those with a religious mandate run things according to their interpretation of God's law. Isn't it? Hello? Bueller? ... Bueller? ... Anyone?

?otD: Oh, the humanity?

The Anon/HBGary piece was interesting. Regardless of how one feels about Anonymous, one wonders how a "security researcher" can be so juvenile and irresponsible as to completely blow the security of his own firm. I guess the rent-a-cop with delusions of grandeur is not limited to the local shopping mall. And the part where he kept ignoring the advice of his coder is priceless. How'd he get a job as a "security researcher" if he can't code?

Do you really want to get into what happens to a country when you let atheists run it?

?otD: Oh, the humanity?
AotD: there is a great albeit potentially quite grim science fiction story lurking in that particular example of transpositive bowdlerzation wrt to Huck Finn.

data points from India regarding people who feel that they have a religious mandate to maintain cultural purity:

Jammu

Delhi

Chennai

Bhubaneswar

Hyderabad

and many more, but you get the idea.

tasty link salad today.
