Libya and the Conservative ConundrumA fair percentage of [conservatives] reject the president's policy of bombing Libya while being in favor of bombing Libya.

Who's Really Behind Recent Republican Legislation in Wisconsin and Elsewhere? (Hint: It Didn't Start Here) — An essay from embattled historian William Cronon. The GOP may have bitten off more than they can chew in trying to intimidate this guy. (Thanks to [info]shsilver.)

Haley Barbour Comes Out Against Slavery — Nice to see the leading lights of the GOP catching up on current events. Also some interesting historical counterfactuals in this piece.

Gingrich fears 'atheist country ... dominated by radical Islamists'Hours after declaring Sunday that he expects to be running for president within a month, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said he's worried the United States could be "a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists," in the foreseeable future, according to Politico. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. Are conservatives really this stupid? This is nothing but scare word bingo. In what conceivable universe are radical Islamists also secular atheists? (Via Pharyngula.)

To ideologues like Gingrich, if you're not Christian, you're a secular atheist. Doesn't matter if you have a strong belief system elsewhere.

(And I am appalled and horrified that he considers himself to be Catholic these days. Um, normally I'm pretty tolerant about divorce. But this? Blatant and flagrant disregard for the Church's teaching. He's squeaking by on the tiniest of technicalities--the Petrine exception, I believe it is called, or, IOW, if you were divorced or married before you became Catholic, and the other party is not Catholic, then you weren't married in the eyes of the Church. Who the hell is his confessor, and are they so blinded by political advantage that they can't see the contradictions?)

It's kind of like what they've done with the term 'socialist'. When you can't win on ideas, scare the crap out of people.

I knew Dr. Cronon at one time. I would question your use of the word 'embattled' -- he is in no danger of losing his position or standing in the intellectual community, and he doesn't get intimidated so far as I knew. although generally unfailingly affable he is possessed of a formidable intellect, relentless curiosity, and time enough and more to devote to whatever takes his interest. Methinks someone made a mistake if they thought he could be rolled over or shut up. Best to have not engaged at all. Should be very instructive to watch.

Ah, Newt. Such sweet words...secular and atheist. Since those cancel out the radical Islamists bit, I like his vision.

>>A fair percentage of [conservatives] reject the president's policy of bombing Libya while being in favor of bombing Libya.<<

I've already seen a handful of conservatives I know struggling between wanting to fight Obama by defunding the military action while running into the fact that they find any military defunding to be anathema.
