Where Do You Write?

Cascade: 1941Shorpy with a gorgeous, powerful image of Parker Dam.

Trivializing the Slave Trade — Or how to seriously misuse history and vast human suffering in order to be briefly clever.

Why Can't More Poor People Escape Poverty?A radical new explanation from psychologists. (Via David Goldman.)

Ellsberg: All Nixon’s Crimes Against me now Legal — For those of you who long for the good old days of American politics.

More on Palin's History Babble — The actual "gotcha" question she's been complaining about that led to her bizarre ahistorical Paul Revere answer. I'd laugh, except millions of people believe her.

In case you didn't figure it out already, that French prize nomination is for best translated fantasy novel.

The bizarre thing for me in the discussion of poverty is that I know people who were poor, especially those who were poor through circumstances rather than anything they did or didn't do, but still cling to this belief about poor = lazy, etc. I can understand a disconnect that, say, ignores evidence for evolution, but not when you've had such deeply-held ideas so thoroughly and empirically demonstrated to be wrong.

I've been wondering about that "gotcha" question. I couldn't find it anywhere. That's a hoot! Oh, world, why are you so mean to poor Sarah?

Yup. My favorite way is to go up the Wahkeenah Falls trail, then cut across and go back down the Multnomah Falls trail. (Followed by an ice cream at the snack bar and a short walk on a trail that parallels the highway back to the Wahkeenah Falls parking lot.)
