[links] Link salad for a quiet Tuesday

Why science needs art — Art guru James Gurney is fascinating. There's a parellel here to the relationship between fiction and reportage, I think.

Will We Ever Have a Fully Digital Brain?British researchers are using a million ARM processing cores to simulate the human brain--or 1% of it, at least.

A win for reality in Texas! — Amazingly, the ongoing and generally successful conservative campaign to destroy education in this country actually lost a round. In Texas.

Anti-government, anti-democracy — The Tea Party is what conservatism has come to. Much to their shame, and to the deep detriment of the country as a whole. The contradictions of these Hobbesian hippies are seen most clearly when they are asked to explain what it is that they are for — what it is that they would like to see replace the "government of the people, by the people and for the people" at which they sneer with such vicious contempt. It's not easy to get an answer.

Do I have to pass some bureaucrat's religious test? — On clerks in New York state who view issuing same-sex marriage licenses as a violation of their religious freedom. To which I say the same thing I say to pharmacists who won't issue birth control meds under so-called "conscience laws". Get a different job, or do the one you have. Only a conservative could twist logic so. (Snurched from Dispatches from the Culture Wars.)
