Vonnegut Banned - Again — As Vonnegut himself said years ago, If you are an American, you must allow all ideas to circulate freely in your community, not merely your own. There's a lesson lost on Christianists and conservatives alike. The free exchange of ideas strengthens us and opens our minds — both of which are demonstrably antithetical to their worldview, especially when it comes to the deliberate miseducation of children as practiced by Republican dominated school boards and state boards of education across the country. It saddens me that our country comes back to this again and again. (Via @icowrich.)

This is America. Taking hostages works.

At least insofar as the other person, or political party, is more than willing to pay the ransom.

I am skeptical that Dan Cooper survived. Maybe, but extremely unlikely. What I know about the world of airplanes since DH went into aerospace, plus what I know about conditions in that area during that time of year....uh, no. Not unless he was buddy-buddy with a few Sasquatch who were waiting for him (there's a good kid's book by Roland Smith that manages to neatly mash up Sasquatch and the D.B. Cooper legend quite nicely).

If he had access to modern thermal clothing, that'd be different. But Thermolite/synthetic polypropolene didn't exist then, and weather conditions were such that unless he had a cache of winter wear available, he might have survived the landing but died of hypothermia. 40s and wet can kill you faster than colder temps with snow if you aren't prepared for it.

I do believe that the extreme right is dictatorial. But they are not entirely to blame for the effect they have been allowed to have on the country.

It's like the rest of the government -- and the populace -- is tiptoeing around an abusive, manipulative family member. We suffer from their tyranny only because we allow it.

There will always be tyrants and bullies. How successful they are depends on the will in those around them to stand up to them and put them in their place -- and, in particular, to counter their lies and/or mistakes with the truth, loudly and clearly.

When I find myself mostly agreeing with David Frum I know there is something wrong in the world. :(
