Inflated medical bills mask true cost of careOne man’s case illustrates the problem: His medicine to treat Crohn’s disease runs the hospital about $6,300 per dose. But the bill he gets is for $38,000. This is very true of my cancer treatments.

While the inflated medical bills article has a grain of truth to it, the medicine is not the only cost related to the patient's medical bills, and it's a large lie to imply or state that the medicine is the only cost.

I once brought a medical bill to work to share with my fellow nurses. They were astounded by how much things we generally think nothing about cost. It really is a world unto itself. I remember someone explaining to me that the cost of a tylenol is not just the pill, but the pharmacist that dispenses it, the nurse who administers it, and everything else involved.

Real healthcare reform will only come when we are able to take a real look at what things cost.

The Crone's disease caught my attention. I've had it for nearly 25 years. About the only kvetch I have with that article is; no one will proscribe morphine for that sort of pain. Opiates are simply not used for bowel pain. At least in all the cases I've had. Heck, most of my pain management is a wooden spoon, and sheer manic mental displacement.
