I went to Lehigh and Beth Steel was something you could see from the dorm windows. You also had to wipe the soot off the window sill once a week. They had two miles of steel plant that had not operated at full capacity since WWII. They had also not modernized since WWII... Needless to say they were wildly inefficient compared to the micro steel plants. At one point they started tearing down unused steel plants to use as raw materials for the plants still operating.

I'm a non-believer and don't do the whole holiday thing so I like to work this time of year (while its quiet and I can get a lot done) and let my believer co-workers have the time off. It means more to them and I'd rather use my vacation days travelling the world.

We have the original prototype for that IBM RAMAC at my workplace. It was invented by my predecessors at the San Jose lab.

(BTW, if you didn't know, one of the reasons for the Internet, iPods and high-capacity laptop drives today is the work my colleagues and I did in the late 80s/early 90s developing the Spin-Valve read head. My name's on a couple of the preliminary patents.)
