Uncompassionate ConservatismThe point isn’t necessarily that Romney has lived in privilege all his life; so did FDR. It’s his apparent inability or unwillingness to imagine what it’s like for those less privileged, his complete failure to try, even in his imagination, walking in someone else’s shoes that stands out. This echoes a point I've made a number of times in the past is that the contemporary incarnation of conservatism involves a failure of both empathy and imagination. (Via David Goldman.)

I first got on a plane in December 1963, a Boeing 707 of BOAC (now British Airways, after merging with BEA).

The "failure" of imagination or empathy is a feature, not a bug. It shows the impact of Ayn Rand and her philosophy of Objectivism on the modern conservative movement. And it isn't enough to have contempt for the poor and weak, one must have contempt for people who don't have contempt for the poor and weak.

Re: Uncompassionate Conservatism:

20+ years ago I read a Doris Lessing short story in which the protagonist was a bag lady, and her faithful cat provided her with dead pigeons to eat.

My husband assures me that this is not what I'm faced with.

However, due to the way the government emphasizes such matters... I am not convinced that he's correct. I may well end up eating cat-killed pigeons... IF I am lucky enough at that point to have a cat who will share.

This is a personal nightmare... but not an atypical one.
