Oceans Acidifying Fastest in 300 Million Years Due to Emissions — Darn that liberal bias in reality!

Will Limbaugh apology quell controversy? — I really don't understand why this is a controversy. This is much like the recent Pat Buchanan firing. The man has built an entire, incredibly successful career out of being aggressively offensive. This deep nastiness has made him the soul of the Republican party. Who could possibly be surprised now? More on this from an overseas perspective.

Santorum Can’t Run Away from Limbaugh, who is just taking Santorum’s ideas to their logical conclusion — Well, duh. Limbaugh's hateful diatribes and nasty, fact-free manipulations have made him the monster from the id of conservative America a lot longer than Santorum's been on the national stage.

Cruelty, Continued — Ta-Nehisi Coates on Limbaugh. [A]rguably the dominant trait of the conservative movement was cruelty.

This has been my take on the entire brouhaha. Seriously, what's the news angle here? Rush Limbaugh said something stupid? Since when is that news?

My take is that:

1. it seemed a bit farther over the edge than usual for him, more personally nasty, and against an apparently ordinary nice college student instead of a famous celebrity/politician. Since so many people use birth control, probably many people realized that in effect he was calling them (if they are women) or own daughters, wives, girlfriends, etc "sluts" and "prostitutes" and saying he wanted to watch them have sex.

2. recently there is much controversy over the right wing trying to control women's rights, so progressives are more pissed off at the right than usual - he hit a rawer than average nerve.

Edited to add: about it being more personal, see e.g.:

I agree with goulo - it's a very raw nerve at the moment. Also, as about 95% or more of American women take, or have taken, or plan to take birth control pills, he is basically insulting 51% of the population of this country. It's a bit broader than usual. Is he disgusting and misogynistic and racist always? Yes. Was he being worse than usual? Maybe not. But we're under a lot of attack right now, we women, and I personally am angrier than usual and itching for someone to punch.

And even if he is this bad always, isn't past time that everyone said "enough" and demanded he stop? I hope he gets canceled. I hope many bad things for him, karma-wise.

Believe, I hope all that bad karma for him and far more. I just don't understand why after all these years of Limbaugh's disgusting behavior it suddenly matters now...it should have mattered fifteen or twenty years ago, if we had any decent sense as a country.

Well, if you think of the country as a whole - it's a slow moving, mostly complacent beast. It takes a lot of poking to get it to wake up and do anything. This particular stick has been very poke-y lately. There are a lot of people out there who hate women, so it takes a large and pointy stick to make the country say "Hey, stop that."

I do wish he'd been canceled 20 years ago. I wish many things. But I'm glad *something* happened in the large beast consciousness to say "This is not OK, and you have to stop now." I don't know if it will work, but I'm glad the majority of people are shaming him for being such a giant asshat.

I guess it matters now because it matters now. At least it matters, is how I'm feeling.

I'm just sorry Limbaugh's gotten as much coverage on this as he has. I sometimes wonder -- if everyone ignored him, would he go away? Or is he like all the other trolls, here forever no matter what?

Rachel Maddow had an interesting take on it, she said that Rush doesn't understand how hormonal birth control works. He seems to think you take a pill every time you have sex.
