What’s eating Appalachia? Many Democrats in the region seem to hate their presidentMike Teets, the only Republican on the Hardy County Commission, denies that race has anything to do with local antipathy towards Mr Obama. But he is concerned that the president may be a Muslim, secretly in cahoots with Osama bin Laden, whose killing he could have faked. He also wonders whether the president might be gay. Uh huh. Nope, no racism here among real Americans of either party.

Actually, neither of the accusations mentioned -- neither being a secret Muslim nor being gay -- is particularly racist, and either could be made against a white man. Islam is a religion, and homosexuality a sexual orientation. The sterotypical Muslim is Arab (a white ethnicity) and the stereotypical homosexual is a WASP.

Just out of curiosity, how many white presidents have large masses of people worried might be a Muslim?

Depending on whether or not you follow the "one drop" rule, either 'one' (Obama) or 'none.' This does not change the fact that there is nothing inherent about being "Muslim" that means one is "non-white" -- a large perecentage of the world's Muslims are "white."

The reason why some people believe Obama to be Muslim is that he has consistently sucked up to Muslims during his Presidency, in the context of a war against Islamic terrorists.

And there is nothing about eating watermelon or fried chicken that is inherently a racial signifier, and yet when there is an image of Obama with those items is it really arguable that there is nothing racist about it?

Having had the (disadvantage?) of an education including anthropology and history, I tend not to see "Muslim" as a "racial signifier" meaning black, because I am well aware that Islam originated among one Caucasian group (Arabs) and spread to many others (including Iranians and Turks, two of the most historically-important non-Arab Muslim groups). I am willing to admit that many Americans may associate "Muslim" with the American Black Muslims, who bear roughly the same relation to mainstream Muslims that the Mormons do to mainstream Christians (both Black Muslims and Mormon Christians have large parts of their faith based on what amounts to religious fanfics).

Do you actually believe that? If so, you're widely separated from objective reality on this one. Ask any Muslim, for starters.

If you're getting your information from FOX News or Rush Limbaugh, I suppose you might come to think something like that, but out here in the reality-based community that's a pretty laughable assertion.
