"Wasteful" science that wasn't: New prize honors US-funded basic researchThe award emphasizes how federal science funding boosts the economy. The tide "always comes in, and always goes out. You can't explain that." That's all the science conservatives need.

Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan: could 2012 be like 1980?A Reagan myth is that he roared back to a late win against Carter. But Romney may take more heart from Ford's 1976 loss.

I'm not sure SFF is any worse than political forums, and probably somewhat better. At least some of the recent controversies are helpful in that they highlight who is actually a fuckwit - as someone on one of the fanwank sites said, pre-emptive banning is always helpful once the worst offenders are highlighted.

And I'm not sure they've ever hung anyone in Harrogate - much too genteel.

Mitt Romney seems to have a Romney problem rather than a media problem. Working from home I frequently have talking heads TV on in the background and most of the time the general vibe from the media is 'he said wah????'.

Of course, I have more of a problem with the media actually giving him and his surrogates a much easier ride than they deserve based on the errant nonsense they're peddling.
