Coyotes, bears, and lions: the new urban pioneers?New research suggests mountain lions and bears may be following the urban pioneering of raccoons, foxes and, most notably, coyotes as they slowly encroach on major US metro areas.

Abortion rates plummet with free birth controlProviding birth control to women at no cost substantially reduced unplanned pregnancies and cut abortion rates by 62 percent to 78 percent over the national rate, a new study shows. The research, by investigators at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, appears online Oct. 4 in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Good luck getting the forced pregnancy movement to even acknowledge this fundamental piece of common sense reality, let alone accept it. If they were really for a woman about reducing or eliminating abortions, they'd be leading the charge for contraception, women's health and equal pay for equal work.

Many thanks for posting the "Windcatchers of Persia" link. I have just began writing a story set in ancient Iraq/Persia (neo-Babylon), where in the opening scene people drink beer -- which probably was discovered/invented in Mesopotamia -- and this gives me the perfect lead (a.k.a. excuse) to keep it colder than room temperature.

Make no mistake: I enjoy all the links you put out: some (obviously) more than others. But a gem like this -- perfectly timed for me -- makes it all the more worthwhile.

Take care, and much strength through another harrowing chemo!

My absolutely favorite piece of historical trivia in the whole world is that Rube Goldberg owned a brothel in San Francisco. Just think about the possibilities ...

(My second favorite piece of historical trivia is that incubators got started as sideshow curiosities. One of my mom's friends was a sideshow preemie in the 19-teens.)
