Official State Crap: Alabama — Why does a hotbed of Creationist idiocy like Alabama have an official state fossil?

Ted Cruz: Conservatives are winningSen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), an emerging leader of the new generation of conservative Republicans in Congress, on Saturday urged conservatives to double down on their principles and said the movement has started winning the debate. You go, Ted! Bigotry, racism, sexism, intolerance, willful ignorance and unrestrained violence are the GOP brand. Keep right on doubling down, keep right on shrinking into irrelevance.

Maybe that's why Alabama put the word "species" in the name of the fossil species -- so if they were called on it, they could just point to it and say "oh, that's a mistake."

The Swedish Mannequin turns out not to be a hoax, just a mis-reported location for the mannequins in the original story - it's been updated now.

I have the feeling that Alabama getting an official state fossil may've had something to do with a scientist / speculative poet named David Kopaska-Merkel. Or I could be completely misremembering. But it's a nice thought.
