Pope Francis Says Atheists Who Do Good Are Redeemed, Not Just Catholics — Why does any religion get to claim the good done by non-believers. I can definitely see the condescension in the Pope's remarks, but remember that the Pope's primary target is other Catholics, many of whom may have atheist family members their Catholic relatives are terrified for. This both alleviates their anxiety, and makes it less likely they'll harass those atheist loved ones. With the amount of hate the fundamentalists are throwing around these days, it's a good time for such a comment.

The secondary audience is probably a toss up between Protestants who are getting poked in that ever so sensitive Works vs. Faith spot*, and everyone else who is getting the "hey, we think people are cool!" message.

*Actually, now that I think of it, this is less of a poke, and more of a blow with a baseball bat. I'd imagine Francis would say that people with faith get the everyday benefits that come with that, but that long term, it's about what we do.

That first link, I'm QUITE sure that there's a T-shirt store somewhere in that mall selling offensive T-Shirts. The article lists a few of the classic offenders of good taste that can be found in any suburban mall.

As Makia says, “They say they don’t want that in their mall, but they sell it. That’s not right.”

Gorram stupid insensitive hypocrites.
