Yesterday, we went swimming with dolphins. Lisa Costello stayed on shore due to discomfort with small boats. The rest of us donned wet suits and rode about thirty minutes south of Kaiokoura to where a pod of 300+ dusky dolphins were playing on the surface.

The shoreline there is a range of snowy, craggy mountains. The seas were moderate, four to six foot swells. Which is a lot when you're bobbing in the water. The dolphins were playful and engaged. For me it was a very difficult experience in some ways, but also a fantastic one. I think it was pretty epic for [info]the_child.

There will be pictures, bandwidth permitting.

Today we visit a seal colony, an aircraft museum, then take the ferry from Blenheim on the South Island to Wellington on the North Island.

If you have the time and capacity, I *strongly* recommend going on one of the mail delivery boat runs that operate out of Picton (which is where the ferry actually departs, if it's the ferry I'm thinking of). The mail boats deliver the mail to all the little accessible-only-by-boat properties scattered all over the Queen Charlotte Sound - it's delightful, relaxed several hours, with spectacular scenery, and the locals come out and meet the the mailboat as it arrives at each private jetty, often with their pets. It was one of the highlights of my recent visit to the Blenheim region earlier this year.
