Yesterday, we went swimming with dolphins. Lisa Costello stayed on shore due to discomfort with small boats. The rest of us donned wet suits and rode about thirty minutes south of Kaiokoura to where a pod of 300+ dusky dolphins were playing on the surface.

ZOMG.

The shoreline there is a range of snowy, craggy mountains. The seas were moderate, four to six foot swells. Which is a lot when you're bobbing in the water. The dolphins were playful and engaged. For me it was a very difficult experience in some ways, but also a fantastic one. I think it was pretty epic for [info]the_child.

There will be pictures, bandwidth permitting.

Today we visit a seal colony, an aircraft museum, then take the ferry from Blenheim on the South Island to Wellington on the North Island.

You're describing (in very different circumstances, granted - my own dolphin encounters were of a more tropical kind) what I consider to be one of the most amazing experiences of my own life - and I had the chance to do this twice, the dolphin encounters. And I'll never forget a moment of either of those. Why did you find it difficult...?
