[travel|photos] New Zealand travelog recap - Kaikoura to Blenheim, plus airplanes

On August 5th, we drove from Kaikoura, stopping at Ohau Point, then on to Blenheim, where we visited the Omaka Aviation Heritage Center.

The countryside was very pretty.

We stopped at the aircraft museum, which is basically Peter Jackson's personal collection of WWI (and earlier) planes and related memorabilia. Many of them still fly. Jackson apparently has an entire factory in Wellington devoted to building historically accurate replicas as well as restoring originals. Oddly, New Zealand health and safety regulations don't permit some of these aircraft to be flown as originally designed, due to unmuffled engines, lack of working brakes, and so forth. There is no exemption for historical equipment.

Some very cool stuff.

Our route of travel the first part of that day. And the overall maps of the trip.

Tomorrow, Wellington.
