Here are the pills I take every day, 21 days in row. I then take 7 days off before I start again. Each pill costs about $120, each day's dose costs about $480.

So as a society, we're spending almost $500 per day, almost $10,000 per month keeping me alive. Without this medicine, I'd be on my deathbed right now.

In case you're wondering how much it costs on a daily basis for me not to die.

(Thankfully, my health insurance covers all of this but a small co-pay.)

My latest prescription for skin cancer cream would have cost me between $800 and $1000 for a two-day dose of cream if I did not have good insurance. There's a cheaper alternative that takes four weeks and isn't nearly as effective.

(It's amazing cream. It destroys the precancerous cells and highlights the cancer cells so the doctor can do biopsies. But damned, it's expensive.)

And my case is nuttin' compared to yours.

And it's worth noting that those insanely high prices are a "feature" of the US: drugs cost a fraction of that in many other countries.

And if you were poor, the wrong colour or sex, or lived in the wrong part of the country, there are people who would say that you did not deserve treatment on one or more of those bases.

Believe me, I am very clear on this. That is increasingly the greatest reason I could never be an American conservative, and also why I have lost what little remained of my respect for the moral and intellectual standing of American conservatives.
