Planthopper Nymphs Have ‘Fireworks’ Shooting Out Of Their Butts! — I've been on dates like that. (Thanks to David Goldman.)

Increased human life expectancy correlates to increase in species extinctionAs GDP per capita increases, so does the percentage of invasive species.

Why Shutting Down U.S. Antarctic Research Will Have Global Repercussions — Why in the world would Republicans care about science? As profound a loss as this is to America and the world, and to anybody who cares about this country's future, such a shut down of Antarctic science and its focus on climate change can hardly seem like any kind of loss to the GOP or its voters.

The core Internet institutions abandon the US Government — Thanks to our invasive and heavy handed national security apparatus, the US will no longer have the strong influence over Internet governance which we've enjoyed up until now. (Via [info]danjite.)

Depths of irresponsibility: GOP on the debt limitRepublicans do seem to be getting ready to surrender (although they seem to have only reached the stage at which they’re asking for rewards for surrendering; it may take a while longer for them to fully understand the concept). A true economic disaster may yet be avoided. But everyone should remember just how irresponsible they’ve been on this one.

Cruzification of the GOPSeventy percent say Republicans are putting politics ahead of the good of the country. Too bad so many of those folks will have completely forgotten this basic, long-term truth about the GOP come the next election day.

Unlike their not caring about Antarctic research, probably many Republicans DO think the US should be the sole country in control of the Internet, so it's kind of funny that their shutdown is prompting Internet organizations to become more independent of the US.

(For the overall global health of the Internet, the Republicans' government shutdown was probably a very good thing... a small silver lining...) :)

"Republicans do seem to be getting ready to surrender..."

I've heard noise about the Koch Brothers telling them to stay away from Obamacare as any part of the budget argument. My guess about this is the same as many pundits: A debt default would cost the Kochs a ghastly amount of money. Proving that one way or another consequences can come to anyone regardless of how well insulated you may think you are.
